- 1.1 OBJECTIVES OF ASSESSMENTThe objectives of assessment are primarily to evaluate the performance of individuals, to assess the efficiency of the system, and to enhance learning. These fundamental functions can also be expanded to include selection and placement, responsibility, diagnosis, and support for learning and development. The primary aim of selection and placement is to evaluate the test or exam used to choose candidates for the next phase of training, promotion, or placement into categorical bands. Responsibility evaluates the efficacy of educators and institutions in helping learners achieve their intended learning outcomes for their grade level. In the meantime, diagnostic assessment is used to recognize the underlying sources of learning challenges and difficulties. Another objective of assessment is to support and monitor the progress of learning. This is accomplished by providing learners with feedback on their performance to assist them in improving, helping educators identify changes to be made in their delivery methods, and increasing learners' motivation and confidence by demonstrating progress. Earl (2013) divides the objectives of assessment into three categories: assessment for learning, assessment as learning, and assessment of learning.3
