COURSE DESCRIPTION
Engaging learning content is frequently aesthetically pleasing. Therefore, applying the principles of visual design when creating learning content can help you capture your learners’ attention and spark their interest. Why is visual design important in online learning? Laja (2019) and Whalen (2021) mentioned that a powerful first impression is vital, and the first impressions of online content are 94% design related. This impression gives learners a comfortable welcoming to a new experience and can assist learners in recalling information and motivating them to take action. Furthermore, learning content with appealing visual design is mapped better in learners’ minds (Williams, 2009). Learners will quickly lose interest if the learning content is not presented in an attractive way, no matter how solid the theory is. To be effective, learning content should be carefully prepared and visually engaging. Thus, the use of media elements such as graphics, audio, animation, video, text, and elements, alongside the application of design principles in designing good learning content, not only grabs but keeps learners’ interest. Such elements provide feelings of ease, comfort, and curiosity to continue learning. Additionally, effective visual design can also improve the learners’ navigational experience, boost engagement among learners, enhance knowledge retention, and increase course completion rates.
